A staple and foundation skill in bushcraft is to use a ferrocerium rod to generate sparks to light a fire.  These things are the modern day version of a flint and steel.

They are water proof, last a very long time, are cheap and they don´t break.  Matches and lighters are great things to have but they both run out eventually and are susceptible to getting wet or breaking so cannot be relied up on on their own.

You can use a wide range of tinder materials with a ferro rod but a common and extremely good option is Silver Birch bark which is effectively natures fire lighter.

You may have tried this before and failed but don´t worry.

It is very easy to use once you know how and in this video, i´ll talk you through it.
